Yorkshire flash floods: Firefighters pump out buildings

Parts of Yorkshire have been hit by flash floods, causing some homes and businesses to be evacuated.

About 50 firefighters have been pumping out buildings in Goole, East Yorkshire.

Humberside Fire Service said it received 135 calls in just three hours as torrential rain and hail fell on the town on Wednesday afternoon.

In the York area, a clean-up is under way in Dunnington and at a Tesco supermarket in Askham Bar, which was evacuated after the roof began leaking.

Tree collapsed

In Goole, a residential home for the elderly and a supermarket in the town centre were among the buildings evacuated.

Firefighters were even forced to pump out their own flooded fire station.

They were also helping workers from East Riding Council hand out sandbags to affected residents.

Goole fire station manager Dave Bristow said: "We have had a high number of calls in the Goole area.

"If people are concerned about flooding they should consider calling the emergency services only for life risk or where the water has caused a hazard due to contact with electrics."

Goole resident Christine Sweeting said: "It was just really really torrential rain. You could not actually see, it looked like a fog. You could not even see the cars...it was horrendous."

The storm caused a tree to collapse in one area of Dunnington.

The village is due to be judged on Thursday as Yorkshire's entry in this year's Britain in Bloom competition.
