East Yorkshire council takes over parking enforcement

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has taken over parking patrols after Humberside Police decided to withdraw its traffic warden service.

From Monday 7 November the authority is responsible for issuing fines of £70 to drivers parking illegally in the county.

For the past fortnight the civil wardens have been handing out dummy tickets as a warning to drivers.

The service is funded through the fines and parking charges.

The council said its new parking enforcement would reduce the number of drivers parking illegally.

John Skidmore, head of the council's streetscene services, said: "It's all about encouraging safe and sensible parking.

"We have got parking problems, we've got people parking on double yellow lines in Beverley, Bridlington, in Snaith and Holderness and people have been wanting action where its causing safety problems so we've had great response from residents.

"There will be no charge to the taxpayer. The service will be self-financing after a five-year period so no individual targets have been set."
