MPs and unions press BAE to save threatened jobs

MPs and unions are pressing BAE Systems to save nearly 900 workers from redundancy in East Yorkshire.

They are holding talks with bosses at the defence giant for the last time before the 90-day consultation into the job losses ends on 26 December.

BAE Systems announced plans in September to cut posts at its Brough site to maintain its competitiveness.

But BAE is being pressed to save as many of the jobs as possible.

The firm wants to shed the jobs at Brough together with almost 1,400 at its sites in Warton and Samlesbury, Lancashire.

MPs Diana Johnson, Andrew Percy, Karl Turner along with Unite union convener Ian Gent are also lobbying the defence contractor on ways to assist its workers and with the wider regeneration of its Brough site.

Last week BAE workers from Brough presented a petition, which included photographs of those set to lose their jobs, to Prime Minster David Cameron in Downing Street.
