Humber Bridge travellers see toll reduction

Toll charges on the Humber Bridge have been reduced in a move the government claims will boost the regional economy by £250m.

Tolls for cars have halved to £1.50 and charges for motorcycles have been scrapped completely. Tolls for goods vehicles start at £4.

At midnight members of the local Motorcycle Action Group took part in a celebratory crossing of the bridge.

The bridge's tolls had been the most expensive in the UK.

Last year, the government cleared £150m of the bridge's £330m debt and earlier this year the four councils surrounding the Humber agreed to split the debt equally.

The reduction came after lengthy campaigns by bridge users who argued the damaging impact tolls had on the economy and local people.
