Blue bin collections will increase from every four weeks to fortnightly

East Yorkshire is to start a trial of fortnightly bin collections, the council has said.

It will drop its weekly collection of general waste bins and increase the collection of blue bins, which take paper, plastics, metals and glass.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said the move was in response to demands from the public to increase the rate of collection of the recycling bins.

More than 7,000 homes will take part in the trial, which starts in April.

Under the new scheme recycling bins will be emptied on a fortnightly basis.

According to the council, 53% of all household waste was sent for recycling in February 2012, compared with 42% in the same month last year.

The council said the "blue bins are filling up more rapidly while considerably less waste is being put into the green landfill bins".

The trial includes selected streets in Cottingham, Brough, Elloughton, Hutton Cranswick, Keyingham, Little Driffield, Swanland and Thorngumbald.

The council has already piloted the different collection arrangements in Bridlington using about 1,000 properties.
