Tory candidate plea for Humberside's police commissioner role

A Conservative MP is calling for more Tories to seek election as Humberside's police and crime commissioner.

East Riding councillor Matthew Grove is the only confirmed Tory applicant.

David Davis, Haltemprice and Howden MP, said the new role was a "great opportunity to improve policing" for people from a variety of backgrounds.

Forty-one police and crime commissioners will be elected in England and Wales in November, in areas outside London.

Mr Davis said: "From public sector workers and those in Humberside's business community, to young professionals and former military personnel, we need a contender who recognises the issues facing local neighbourhoods."

A formal selection process for Conservative candidates will start next month.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Prescott, former MP for Brigg and Goole Ian Cawsey and Keith Hunter, a former chief superintendent with Humberside Police are on Labour's shortlist.

The Liberal Democrats are yet to announce their candidates.
