Hull's lost trawlermen: Design competition for memorial

A memorial service is held every year to remember Hull's 6,000 lost trawlermen

A competition is under way to design a memorial to Hull's 6,000 trawlermen who were lost at sea.

The winning design will be installed in the city's St Andrew's Dock, which was the former home of the fishing fleet.

The charity behind the memorial, Saint Andrews Dock Heritage Park Action Group (Stand), said the winning design would be selected by a panel of judges led by Labour's Hull West MP Alan Johnson.

Stand said it hoped the memorial would be ready by April 2014.

An annual memorial service is held by the banks of the River Humber to remember the 6,000 men from Hull who lost their lives in a century of fishing the North Sea.

The shortlist of designs will be put on display in Hull's Maritime Museum over the summer for the public to comment on.
