Willerby drainage works to help protect homes

Villages and towns in East Yorkshire have suffered from flooding in recent years

Half a million pounds of drainage works could reduce the risk of flooding to properties in East Yorkshire.

Work has begun in Willerby to upgrade the drainage system at Great Gutter Lane (West) after the village suffered flooding in 2007.

It is the first phase of a £14.1m project led by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull City Council.

The scheme is expected to reduce the risk of flooding to thousands of homes.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "During the devastating floods of 2007, the drainage system in Great Gutter Lane became overwhelmed and resulted in water on the carriageway that then ran-off into urban areas.

"The first phase of this scheme will improve the drainage in the area and will then feed into the series of lagoons."

The first phase will cost £500,000 and is expected to be complete by the summer.
