Hull film-maker Chris Hees scoops Bafta award

A Hull film-maker is celebrating after winning a Bafta award.

Chris Hees won for his debut movie The Bigger Picture in the Best Short Animated Film category.

Hees produced the film, which depicts two brothers struggling to care for their elderly mother. It has also been nominated for an Oscar.

Hees, 27, who joined a host of A-list stars at the ceremony in London's Royal Opera House on Sunday night, said he was thrilled by the film's success.

"It's absolutely amazing and incredible. I'm lost for words."

The 27-year-old, who grew up on the Ings Estate in east Hull, said it was "amazing" to be congratulated on his win by celebrities including David Beckham.

"You're just in awe of all these people who are around you, in the same vicinity and how close you are to them.

"It's great to talk about your work with all these people," he added.

'Eyes welling up'

Hees picked up the accolade only a year after leaving film school.

He produced the film made with other students as part of his graduation project at the National Film and Television School in Buckingham.

His mother Tracey said the whole family had gathered at their home in east Hull to celebrate his success.

"My eyes were welling up, it was just ace. I can't believe it," said Mrs Hees.

She said there were "screams and cheers by everyone" in the family when they found out he had won.

"He texted me and wrote 'wow, we've won'.

"Our hands went up in the air and we were shouting 'yeah'.

"Just to see the text, it felt amazing."
