Plans to preserve and restore buildings in a part of Hull have received a further £1.6m from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Hull City Council wants to improve the appearance of Beverley Road, an area it says has been "long neglected".

The funding will pay for a regeneration scheme allowing residents to apply for grants to cover the cost of improvements to their properties.

Last year HLF agreed an initial £69,000 for the project.

'Bright future'

The funder said it was "delighted" to support the initiative and hoped the money would "secure a bright future" for the conservation area.

Under the restoration scheme, essential work can be carried out to the frontage and boundary improvements of properties on Beverley Road, between Freetown Way and Queens Road.

When the initiative starts later this year, property owners could apply to the authority for grants to make urgent repairs including the restoration of original features "in a way that enhances the heritage of the area", the council said.

Beverley Road, which is one of Hull's oldest roads and a major commuter route into the city, is on the national 'At Risk' register "because of the poor conditions of a number of properties", the council said.

The restoration project is part of a plan to "improve key routes into the city" and will run until 2020.
