Mathew Ford Way named after Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan

A newly-constructed bypass named in honour of a Royal Marine who died in Afghanistan has opened.

The Immingham A18/A180 link road was named in memory of L/Cpl Mathew Ford who died in 2007.

His brother, Scott, said the opening "was emotional and brings back the good memories we had when he was alive."

The £6.5m scheme improves access to the port and allows lorries to bypass the town centre.

L/Cpl Ford, 30, of 45 Commando, died in an advance on a Taleban fort in Helmand on 15, January, 2007.

Ray Oxby, Labour leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "The route will open up Immingham and make it more accessible to inward investment and freight and goods coming out of the port."
