Dozens of people have returned to their homes after a raid to find controlled chemicals in a house in Bridlington resulted in a street being evacuated.

Humberside Police said chemicals found in a property on Oxford Street on Tuesday posed "no explosive risk to residents".

A spokesperson for the force said a bomb disposal team had "mitigated" the situation.

A 61-year-old man has been arrested as part of the operation.

Ch Supt Christine Wilson said: "Following the arrival of specialist officers, we have been able to confirm that the chemicals, while hazardous to those that handle them, pose no explosive risk to residents.

"While the risk to residents has been mitigated, the property is still a live crime scene, and as such a scene guard will be in place overnight."

Humberside Police said a further examination of the property would continue on Wednesday when the "safe removal of the chemicals" would be undertaken.

A spokesperson for the force thanked residents for their patience and said: "I'd like to take this opportunity to reassure residents that incidents of this nature are extremely rare."
