Presenter and naturalist Steve Backshall receives the cheque from Max

An 11-year-old Lincolnshire boy has handed over charity funds to children's TV naturalist Steve Backshall.

Max raised £1,746 for marine charity Bite-Back by litter-picking from 24 beaches across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in 24 hours.

Charity patron Backshall accepted the cheque at Hull City Hall, where he is performing his touring show Ocean.

Max, who sets himself a fundraising challenge each year, said: "I enjoyed knowing I'm doing my bit."

Previously, he has raised money for Crocodiles of the World, The Shark Trust and BBC Children in Need.

This year, inspired by the work of Backshall, Max set out to raise money to help the sharks and other marine life.

The beach clean took him along the coast, between Skegness and Scarborough.

Wet wipes and plastic bottles were among the items found.

Receiving the cheque, Backshall said: "Everything I've been talking about for years, how young people are picking up the mantle, making our planet a better place, Max exemplifies every bit of that.

"He is my hero."

Proud dad Steve Robson has helped Max along the way with his fundraising.

He said: "I couldn't be prouder.

"If you want to make a change, then actually go out and do something. There's lots of work that can be done."
