Extra late bus services are to be laid on for Christmas shoppers and revellers in Hull over the festive period.

New night-bus services will depart at 00:10 and 01:10 GMT from Hull Truck and Alfred Gelder Street between Saturday 2 December and Saturday 24 February.

Bus marshals would be on duty "to ensure the safety of passengers", Hull City Council said.

The Priory Park & Ride will run until 21:00 on Thursdays and 17:00 on Sundays between 16 November and Christmas Eve.

As well as later departures, fares for the extended park and ride service will be discounted to £1 for a return ticket.

The extra buses have been funded by Hull City Council with about £30,000 allocated by the Department for Transport (DfT) for its bus service improvement plan.

The council said the new services, external, run by local operators Stagecoach and East Yorkshire Buses, "aim to provide a timely boost to the local economy and encourage more people to use sustainable forms of transport".

"The services will provide an additional safe and convenient travel option across all parts of the city," it added.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transportation, roads and highways, said: "Whether you are doing a bit of Christmas shopping or getting together with family and friends to celebrate the season, buses will provide a safe and convenient choice, with all buses in the city able to take contactless payments, for getting to and from the city centre.

"The extension of the government's bus fare cap also means that residents can continue to hop on board most East Yorkshire or Stagecoach buses for just £2 per single journey."
