Traffic could be allowed back into East Park in Hull under council plans

Reopening a Hull park to traffic would threaten children's safety, a councillor has warned.

Vehicles could be allowed into East Park under Hull City Council plans.

The council's cabinet member for leisure, Liberal Democrat Rob Pritchard, said the proposals were designed to improve access.

But Labour councillor Hester Bridges said the plan "abandoned all pretence of caring about the environment, or children's health".

The park gates were closed to traffic in 2020 to encourage people to stay active during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ms Bridges, who represents the Southcoates ward, said: "Consultation conducted by Southcoates Labour councillors of residents and park users last year showed overwhelming support in keeping the circular park road-traffic free.

"As a mother, I know first hand the park is currently a much safer place to play for children, free from speeding motor cars and traffic fumes."

The proposals also include a new one-way system for cars from the main gates across the front of the park and new footpaths, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Extra parking spaces would be created, along with a new entrance for drivers from James Reckitt Avenue.

Safety measures would also be introduced to comply with Martyn's Law, which requires those running premises to consider and plan for possible terrorist attacks.

The work would take place in early 2024 if approved, the council said.

Mr Pritchard said: "As a result of feedback from residents within the surrounding area, these outline proposals have been designed to improve access and the connectivity for visitors."

People can find out more about the plans, ask questions and give feedback at the Woodford Leisure Centre from Monday 4 to Sunday 10 December.
