A woman has suffered serious head injuries after being attacked with a hammer.
Humberside Police said the 41-year-old was taken to hospital after being assaulted in Sefton Street, Hull, at about 11:30 GMT on Monday.
The force said two men, aged 28 and 26, were later arrested on suspicion of assault after officers stopped a car travelling west on the M62.
Both men are being held in police custody, the force added.
Appealing for witnesses or any footage taken in the area at the time of the attack, Det Insp Helen Collier said: "We are currently in the early stages of our investigation, but I would like to reassure people that we do believe this to be an isolated incident.
"A scene guard is currently in place whilst officers conduct lines of inquiries to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
"Those living in the area can expect an increased policing presence throughout the day and into the evening whilst our investigation continues."
