Coastal parts of East Yorkshire have woken up to a dusting of snow, forcing some schools to close.

On Thursday morning, Bridlington School and Headlands School, also in the town, confirmed they were closed.

The Met Office said it expected further heavy snow showers this morning, but it would turn brighter later.

Temperatures will struggle to rise much above 0C all day, with lows of -3C expected by early evening, forecasters added.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for snow and ice, external, stretching from Northumberland to Suffolk, is valid until midday on Thursday.

In a statement, Headlands School said: "Due to difficult driving conditions in the area and the weather forecast for more snow until this afternoon, the decision has been made to close the school today for all year groups (apart from students sitting official A-Level exams today).

"Where possible, live lessons will be taught. Where this is not possible, work will be uploaded onto Google Classrooms."
