More than £100,000 has been spent bringing a play area into the 21st Century, said its custodians.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said it had awarded £91,147 to improve facilities at Swanland playing fields.

Swanland Parish Council also contributed £9,873 towards the project, which is now complete and includes wheelchair accessible equipment.

Alan Smith, chair of Swanland Playing Fields Association, said it was now a "wonderful amenity" for the area.

He added: "The play park is just one part of the activities available at the playing fields, but a very important part. The cost of new equipment has been prohibitive and as a result, much of the equipment is over 10 years old."

'Real benefits'

Mr Smith said the upgrade, featuring new swings, roundabouts, slides and an adventure trail, brings the fields "up to the 21st Century".

Councillor Leo Hammond, East Riding of Yorkshire Council's lead for planning and communities, said its contribution towards the upgrade came from house builders as part of planning conditions.

He said the improved facilities would "bring real benefits to the local community".
