Goole: Attempted murder arrest after woman attacked

Police were called to reports of a woman being attacked with a weapon on Boothferry Road on Wednesday

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was left with life-threatening injuries following an assault in Goole.

Police said a woman was attacked with a weapon, believed to be an axe, on Boothferry Road on Wednesday afternoon.

She suffered injuries, thought to be life-threatening, and was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition, officers said.

The man, 56, remained in custody while inquiries continued, detectives said.

Humberside Police said a large-scale search was conducted, supported by colleagues from the National Police Air Service, after the force was called at about 17:30 BST.

A section of the pedestrian precinct was cordoned off by police.

Speaking at the scene, Aaron Harris, a manager at a nearby shop, told the BBC he witnessed the aftermath of the incident at about 18:00 BST.

"I saw a lady laid in an alleyway being helped by officers. It's awful," he said.

"This happened in daylight. Young people were around at the time. You don't expect this in such a small town."

Ali Uddin, manager of Mumbai Indian restaurant, which is a short distance from the scene of the attack, added: "Customers have been coming in all night talking about it. It's terrible."

Det Sup Nicola Burnett, a senior investigating officer, said: "I understand that the extensive police activity in Goole and the surrounding areas this evening may have caused some concern amongst the local community.

"I want to offer my reassurance that we do believe this to have been an isolated incident between people who were known to each other with no wider risk to the public.

"We do have extra officers in the area this evening, both to carry out enquiries and to offer reassurance, and I would urge anyone with any concerns or information to please speak to them."
