A supermarket and new garden centre are proposed as part of the revised plans

Revised plans for a new mixed-use development in a North Lincolnshire town, including a new supermarket, have been submitted.

An application to also build at least 60 homes at the site in Epworth was made last year, with a charity store and new garden centre planned.

However, objectors said they feared it would change the character of the town and create traffic problems.

The developers have now submitted scaled-back plans.

The new proposal for the site off Belton Road would see an existing garden centre replaced by a new one and the creation of a new medical practice, as well as the construction of a new supermarket.

However, the plans for homes and a charity store have been withdrawn.

The proposed development would be built on predominantly brownfield land, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Millea Land Ltd said it would potentially create up to 100 jobs.

'Massive benefits'

Company director Jonathan Millea said: "These plans are the result of listening to lots of feedback from the council, residents and stakeholders.

"We believe they offer massive benefits to the local area."

However, one opponent to the plans wrote: "We do not want Aldi/Lidl or such in a farming community."

The inclusion of the new medical centre follows discussions with the local NHS.

South Axholme GP surgery partner Dr Annie Borrill said the new medical facility would "future-proof resources available to the practice".

It would also "alleviate most, if not all, the restrictions and limitations of our current building", including a dedicated car park and better access, she added.

If approved, the development would see the existing Holmes and Gardens garden centre demolished.
