Service remembers victims of IRA Deal bomb blast dead

A total of 11 Royal Marine musicians died in the blast in September 1989

A memorial service has been held in Kent to mark the 21th anniversary of an IRA bombing which killed 11 Royal Marine musicians.

The attack on the Royal Marines' School of Music at Deal barracks took place on 22 September 1989.

The service on Wednesday was attended by relatives and survivors and led by Reverend Jane Walker whose brother Bob Simmonds was killed in the blast.

A minute's silence was held at 0822 BST - the time the 15lb bomb went off.

More than 20 other bandsmen were injured in the explosion.

The device flattened a three-storey accommodation block and caused widespread damage to nearby homes.

No-one has ever been convicted over the deaths.
