The deadline to apply to hold a street party in Medway to mark next month's royal wedding has been extended.

Medway Council said residents now had until 28 March to apply after receiving a number of last minute enquiries.

The council said it needed to ensure emergency services are notified of road closures, correct signage is in place and alternative routes planned.

Prince William will marry Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey on 29 April.

'Great occasion'

Robin Cooper, the council's director of regeneration, said interest in the royal wedding had intensified in recent weeks.

He said: "We want everyone to celebrate this great occasion safely and enjoyably, so we will provide as much help and advice as we can."

The council will reimburse reasonable costs to cover public liability insurance and provide free traffic cones and signs, he added.

Earlier this month, residents in Rochester threatened to abandon plans for a royal wedding street party because they said there was too much council red tape.
