Second arrest after charity ride cyclist Christian Smith killed

A second person has been arrested after a cyclist on a charity ride in Kent, was killed in a collision with a car.

Christian Smith, 38, from Boughton Aluph, Kent, was raising money for mental health charity Mind when he died on the Old Thanet Way, near Chestfield.

Since his death at 04:00 GMT on Saturday, donations have reached more than £60,000.

A man, 19, is now the second person to be arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The first person, an 18-year-old woman, was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of drink driving and causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Smith began his "Kent Epic" 248-mile trip round Kent and Sussex on Friday.

The crash, which involved a blue Peugeot 206, took place on the A2990. Mr Smith was declared dead at the scene.

'Valuable information'

Kent Police have appealed for a taxi driver who passed the scene of the crash to contact them.

Investigating officer PC Jamie Woodhams said: "I do not believe this driver was involved in the collision but I believe he or she could hold valuable information for us and I would urge the driver to contact me as soon as possible."

On Mr Smith's JustGiving page he said he wanted to support Mind to help end the stigma attached to people with mental health problems.

"I have had my own misfortune to suffer from a spate of poor mental health, which was unexpected and has been a real 'game changer' in how I now view the future," he said.

"It has been a tough road to get to this point, but I have been fortunate enough to have the support of my family and friends."
