A lorry driver has been jailed for three years for causing the death of a cyclist who was hit by his vehicle.

Barbara Phipps, 73, of Lynsted, Kent, died in the crash on the A2 London Road in Teynham on 13 February 2016.

William Magee, of Readers Court, Chelmsford, Essex, admitted causing death by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing at Maidstone Crown Court.

The 59-year-old was also disqualified from driving for five-and-a-half years.

Kent Police said Magee had parked his lorry facing oncoming traffic and CCTV showed he started moving before he began to indicate, hitting Mrs Phipps as she cycled alongside his vehicle.

Sgt Hannah Brown said: "William Magee had already broken the Highway Code by parking in the direction of oncoming traffic, but had he been more careful and used the safety devices fitted to the vehicle before pulling out then this fatal collision simply would not have happened.

"He will have this on his conscience for the rest of his life."
