Improvements to the roundabout on the A20 near Maidstone will take 10 months

Drivers have been warned to expect lane closures when work starts to improve a major roundabout junction in Kent.

The Coldharbour roundabout on the A20, near Maidstone, will be enlarged at a cost of £5m and will take 10 months.

The project will improve traffic capacity by 60% at the peak morning period and 40% during the evening, Kent County Council (KCC) said.

Give way lanes will replace traffic signals at the entry points to the roundabout.

Work is set to start on 12 February and is due to be completed in December.

Breheny Civil Engineering has been contracted to widen the roundabout to three lanes and boost access on the approaches.

KCC said initial phases of the works would require daytime off-peak lane closures.

"Additional works will take place on the existing roundabout island and be completed at night when lane closures will be put in place," it added.

The scheme is being funded through the government's Local Growth Fund and developer contributions.
