A local authority has agreed to invest £2.75m in a scheme to develop a healthy living centre (HLC) in a shopping centre.

Medway Council is to fund the project in Chatham's Pentagon centre.

The money will be split between the HLC and an innovation hub on the first floor of the centre.

Naushabah Khan, Medway Council's portfolio holder for housing and property, said the move was "a big milestone step in the right direction".

The money invested by the local authority is due to be reimbursed by the NHS at a later date, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Ms Khan said: "It is a really important project, one that we are all keen to bring forward."

She said the HLC would be "great for residents" because it is an accessible space with all of the health and medical facilities local people need.

The plans were supported by councillors unanimously, with Tory opposition leader, Adrian Gulvin, saying: "Chatham deserves a first-class health facility."

Ms Khan added: "The HLC will be really fundamental to Chatham and its regeneration efforts."

No deadline for the delivery of the HLC has been set.
