Medway councillors recommend £1 taxi starting fare rise

Taxis in Medway could see starting prices increase to help drivers with the cost of living.
Medway Council's licensing sub-committee heard how the Medway Licensed Taxi Drivers Association had decided to ask for a flag rate increase from £3 to £4 after a survey of its members.
Taxi drivers decided against raising yard rates and waiting time tariffs to remain competitive.
The rates will remain 20p per 170 yards and 20p for 40 seconds of waiting time.
Association chairman Nigel Jackson said a survey of cabbies showed they needed to work up to 70 hours a week to earn a living.
He said the requested increase would also help make the job a more attractive career.
Mr Jackson added: "The £1 increase on the flag to some could seem quite substantial, but in relation to our costs, it will certainly help the trade to earn a sustainable living."
The decision to ask for the increase was not taken lightly, Mr Jackson said.
The last time taxi drivers received an increase in tariffs was in September 2022, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Sub-committee chair and Labour councillor Dan McDonald said it was important to work with licensed cab drivers as they ensured a safe, reliable service for residents.
Councillors approved the decision to recommend the report to cabinet for approval.
