Cancer 'blunder' doctor quits Lancashire hospital

A consultant suspended for two years after failing to spot breast cancer in 61 patients has left his job at a Lancashire hospital, it has emerged.

Dr Glenn Kelly was suspended with pay from Accrington Victoria Hospital following an investigation.

The independent inquiry found Dr Kelly failed to spot breast cancer in 61 women, dating back to 2000.

The hospital has confirmed he resigned in May. He could now face a General Medical Council hearing.

'Incompetent doctor'

The inquiry said the consultant radiologist's techniques were out-dated, and he was not competent in certain areas of his work.

He was suspended in April 2009 when his mistakes came to light.

The doctor could still face being struck off by the GMC.

Duncan Gavan consultant radiologist and Associate Medical Director of Diagnostics and Treatment Services at the hospital said: "Our priority is the women of East Lancashire, they can be confident in the services offered by the East Lancashire Breast Screening Programme.

"Following an internal investigation, Dr Kelly resigned at the end of May 2011."
