Colne parade for Olympic gold cyclist Steven Burke

Olympic gold medallist Steven Burke has returned to Lancashire for a homecoming parade in his honour.

The 24-year-old, nicknamed The Colne Cyclone, won gold in the men's team pursuit track cycling at London 2012.

He was taken on a lap of honour around the town centre in an open-top car, followed by a cavalcade of cyclists from Pendle's local clubs.

The procession began at Colne Railway Station at 14:00 BST and ended at the town hall.

Burke was then greeted by Pendle mayor Asjad Mahmood and interviewed by Brian Cookson, the council's director for regeneration and president of British Cycling.

Mr Mahmood said: "I'm delighted to be able to welcome Steven back to his home town of Colne.

'Inspiration to many'

"He is a brilliant role model for young people and has made Pendle people very proud.

"I know Steven has been training hard for many years, so I'm thrilled he's achieved his dream.

"But I've no doubt this is just the start and that he'll be a household name for many years to come."

Mr Cookson added: "It only seems a couple of years ago that Steven was first showing his talent in youth races at the Manchester Velodrome.

"Now here he is with an Olympic gold medal as part of the astonishing world record-breaking British team.

"He is a real credit to his family and an inspiration to many."

The former Colne Park High School student is a double Olympic medallist.

He had already won a bronze medal in the men's individual pursuit at Beijing in 2008, after being called from the reserve squad with just 48 hours' notice.

Pendle Council announced earlier this month that he is to become an Honorary Freeman of the Borough.
