Fleetwood Pier burnt down in 2008 but plans for a 43-bedroom hotel were rejected in 2010

New plans by a comedian to build a hotel on the site of the former Fleetwood Pier have been approved by Wyre councillors.

The proposal for a two-storey, 18-bedroom hotel was submitted by businessman Mike Simmons, known on stage as Joey Blower.

The pier was destroyed by fire in 2008 and a previous proposal for a 43-bedroom hotel was rejected in 2010.

Campaigners against the proposal have vowed to prevent further developments.

The council received 30 letters of objections about the application.

Labour councillor for Pharos ward, Lorraine Beavers, said: "We have lost the battle but we are still campaigning to stop any more building on our promenade because it is our promenade and it belongs to our children and grandchildren.

"I believe we have got to keep fighting to protect our town against people who are investing in property which won't even be used."

Mr Simmons was unavailable to comment.
