David Lloyd: Accrington street named after cricket legend 'Bumble'

Cricket legend David Lloyd is to have a street named after him in his hometown of Accrington, the council has said.

David Lloyd Way will be created on a new housing development close to the cricket club as well as Accrington Stanley's football ground.

Hyndburn Council leader Miles Parkinson said the former England player is a "fantastic ambassador for our town".

The cricket pundit, 73, nicknamed "Bumble", said it was a "huge honour to be recognised by my hometown".

The ex-Lancashire captain added that he was "looking forward to visiting the street once the development is complete".

He went on: "The street is close to both Accrington Cricket Club and Accrington Stanley Sports Hub, two places which are fantastic future resources for the local community. I am really pleased to have been chosen to form a lasting part of this."

The former England coach also played semi-professional football for Accrington Stanley.

Accrington Cricket Club wanted David Lloyd Way to honour the former all-rounder but Hyndburn Council's policy is not to name streets after living people.

Names such as Bowler Avenue and Fields Way were suggested as an alternative.

However an exception has been made after Hyndburn's Cabinet Street Naming Committee agreed to honour him.

The council leader said Lloyd "put Accrington on the map internationally" not just with his cricket achievements, but also by his support of Accrington Stanley Football Club.

He had previously been given the Freedom of Accrington.

Lloyd played for Lancashire's all conquering one-day side in the 1970s and has a double test century to his name, but is better known as a pundit under his nickname "Bumble" to the current generation of cricket fans.
