A man has died after being struck by a van on the M65 in Lancashire.

Emergency services were called to the westbound carriageway of the motorway between junctions four at Earcroft and three for Pleasington at about 05:30 GMT.

Police believe the 67-year-old driver of a Hyundai stopped and got out before both the vehicle and driver were struck by a Fiat van.

A blue Ford then collided with the Hyundai.

The Hyundai driver, from Bury, Greater Manchester, died at the scene.

The Fiat driver, a 30-year-old man from Darwen and the Ford driver, a 77-year-old man, also from Darwen, were treated for minor injuries.

Police and Highways Agency staff were at the scene for several hours. The road has now reopened.

Sgt Marc Glass said; "An investigation is under way to establish what happened and my thoughts are with all those involved.

"I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the stranded Hyundai to get in touch."
