Plans to create a new space for pre-planned operations in Lancashire have been revealed.

The proposed new facility is part of a £15m scheme of improvements at the Royal Preston Hospital.

The extension, at the Sharoe Green Lane site, would house 36 beds in the Day-of-Surgery Admissions (DOSA) unit to help the flow of patients through the accident and emergency department.

Plans are subject to approval by Preston City Council.

It comes after Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was awarded government cash under a nationwide scheme to boost bed capacity.

The trust is using the funding to upgrade and reconfigure its medical and surgical assessment facilities at the Sharoe Green Lane site, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The DOSA unit cares for patients admitted from the emergency department who potentially need surgery and the new facility is planned to be relocated in a new building between the Gordon Hesling Block and the Rosemere Cancer Centre.

If approved, the facility will have 36 ground floor beds with staff areas and a plant room on the upper level.

The trust has sought pre-application advice from city council planners and has been advised it was considered acceptable in principle.
