A man driving the wrong way on a motorway and carrying three adult passengers and four children without seatbelts has been arrested, police say.

Officers were joining junction 4 eastbound of the M55, at Blackpool, when a vehicle drove towards them.

Police held a man, 39, from Preston, after a breath test reading nearly three times the legal alcohol limit.

He was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and bailed until May.

Police said after officers "brought the car to a stop safely", they had discovered three adult passengers and four unrestrained young children in the vehicle.

A breath test showed "a reading of 84mg at the roadside which is nearly three times the 35mg legal limit", Lancashire Police said.

All passengers were driven to a place of safety off the motorway. Welfare and appropriate child referral agency needs had been put in place and the vehicle was seized, the force added.
