A driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a woman was struck and killed outside a bowling club.
Police are appealing for information after the incident, which happened on Manchester Road in Burnley at about 17.50 GMT on Monday.
Officers had received reports of a Vauxhall Crossland X car hitting two pedestrians.
One of the casualties, a woman in her 70s, later died in hospital.
Lancashire Police said the driver of the Vauxhall initially left the scene, at the car-park of Greenhill Bowling and Social Club, but returned a short time later.
The other woman hit by the vehicle was treated for minor injuries.
The 74-year-old man from Burnley was also arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.
A representative of the bowling club said a decision had yet to be taken on when the club would re-open.
Sgt Martin Wilcock said: "A woman has died in very tragic circumstances and our thoughts are with her loved ones at this time."
He said the investigation was continuing and appealed for anyone with information or footage to come forward.
