A police officer "has been removed from operational roles" while a force investigates a video of a man being kicked in the head.

The footage shows a suspect being apprehended by three Lancashire Police officers outside a Spar shop in Oswaldtwistle on 8 March.

It appears to capture one of the officers kicking and hitting the man.

The force said it was "being investigated by our professional standards department".

The suspect was arrested for drink driving, the force added.

The video, which had been circulated on social media, appeared to show two male officers drag a man from a silver car.

Once he was on the ground, one of the officers appeared to kick him on the shoulder and in the face before he was handcuffed.

The same officer then hit him several times on the head.

In a statement Lancashire Police said: "We are aware of the video, and it is being investigated by our professional standards department. The officer has been removed from operational roles until the matter is investigated.

"The suspect was arrested for drink driving."
