A 21-year-old man has been charged with causing the death of a boy who was fatally hit by a vehicle in Wakefield.

Owen Wightman, six, was hit by a car on Fishponds Lane, in the Chapelthorpe area of the city, on 18 June.

The man, who is from Huddersfield, is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and failing to report an accident.

West Yorkshire Police said he had been bailed to appear at Wakefield Magistrates' Court on 29 November.

Hundreds of people attended Owen's funeral at St James Church at Chapelthorpe in July.

Masses of floral tributes and teddy bears were also left at the crash scene, which is near the church.
