New report on Leeds park and ride sites

A new report by Leeds City Council has found two sites suitable for short-term development as new park and ride sites.

A site adjacent to Elland Road stadium could accommodate up to 1,000 cars and be in place by 2013 at a cost of £2m, according to the report.

It says the Elland Road site could be self-financing within five years and is identified as a "quick win".

There is no firm date for development of the other identified site, next to the East Leeds Link Road.

The report says the number of jobs in Leeds city centre is predicted to rise by up to 23,000 by 2026, generating an estimated 10,000 additional peak-time commuting trips.

The council hopes any new park and ride schemes would reduce carbon emissions and tackle congestion in the city centre.

There is currently only one formal park and ride site serving Leeds, a small 157-space site in King Lane to the north of the city.

It has around 60 cars per day parking there.
