Sir Elton John is to be the first act to play at the new Leeds Arena when it opens next year.

The 65-year-old will stage a concert at the 13,500 capacity venue on 4 September, his only UK indoor date for the year.

JLS have also announced they will play at the arena, which is currently being built on Clay Pit Lane, in Leeds.

Leeds City Council leader Keith Wakefield said having Sir Elton to open the venue was a "great coup".

Mr Wakefield said: "This is a real statement of intent for Leeds Arena as a venue that will compete with the best in Europe and indeed the world."
