A stalled shopping centre which left a massive hole in the centre of Bradford is now due to open on 5 November.

The Broadway is set to welcome shoppers more than a decade after work first started and will create 2,500 jobs.

Retail consultants CACI say the £260m site will boost city centre spending by 78% to approximately £1bn.

Council leader David Green said the development would play a "major part" in solving some of the city's economic problems.

He told BBC Radio Leeds: "We've been waiting for some time for confirmation of the date and now we've got it we can make sure it's a great event for Bradford."

Developers Westfield started work on the site in March 2004, but it was halted in February 2008 due to the financial crisis.

Local residents nicknamed the 12-acre site left by the builders "the Bradford hole".

Construction restarted in December and the owners announced Debenhams and Marks and Spencer will be the "anchor retailers" of the centre, with 70 other shops and restaurants.
