Rotherham CCTV plan for taxis

  • Published

All taxis and private hire vehicles in Rotherham could be made to install CCTV equipment capable of recording audio and video.

An independent report into child sexual exploitation, external in the town said taxis were used by abusers in Rotherham to traffic victims.

In a consultation on the changes 118 of 455 responses (26%) agreed vehicles should be fitted with CCTV that continuously records video images.

Families of the abused backed the move.

The Rotherham Private Hire Drivers Association said "fitting a CCTV system must be optional" and the Rotherham Hackney Carriage Association said it understood the need for CCTV but requested the fitting of "any type and what fits our budget".

If agreed the CCTV system would be required in all licensed vehicles within three months.
