Huddersfield murder case: Worker died in attack by 'several people'

A 53-year-old man died on Manchester Road in the Linthwaite area of Huddersfield

A factory worker was killed and another man seriously hurt when they were attacked by "several people" outside a pharmaceutical plant.

The 53-year-old died after being injured outside Thornton & Ross in Huddersfield on Thursday night.

It is understood the man was stabbed after confronting the group.

Police said four males, aged 17, 15 and two 18-year-olds, along with a 17-year-old girl, were being held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

The injured man, aged 39, is being treated in hospital but his injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

He is believed to have tried to help the man who died.

A Thornton & Ross worker, who did not want to be named, said: "It's been getting bad for a while round here with groups of youths.

"He was a lovely chap. We are all gutted."

A statement from Thornton & Ross, which is based in the Linthwaite area, said it was "saddened and shocked" by events.

"Our immediate thoughts are with the families and colleagues affected by this tragic incident."

Two men were attacked at about 23:45 GMT on Thursday

Police, who would not confirm whether the man had been stabbed, said a post-mortem examination would be carried out to establish the cause of death.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Ridley, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "Detectives are continuing a number of enquiries into this extremely serious offence and we fully appreciate the concern it has and will continue to cause locally in Linthwaite and in nearby communities.

"Our increased patrols will continue in the area and we continue to appeal for information."
