Three men from West Yorkshire have been jailed for their roles in violence that broke out after a Manchester carnival.

Two rival gangs clashed on 15 August 2022 following the Caribbean Carnival, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Mikyle Bucknor and Karmarni Batler were jailed on Tuesday for attempted murder and Harlan Richards was imprisoned for possession of a firearm.

The violence led to the death of Javell Morgan, 20, and two people have been jailed separately for his murder.

The two rival groups travelled from Huddersfield to Moss Side in Manchester ahead of the incident, according to police.

Batler, Bucknor and Richards, who all had guns with them, were members of one gang.

When they approached an opposing group, Bucknor's firearm was discharged in their direction. The bullet hit the floor and did not cause any injuries, despite being shot in a crowded public place.

But the rival group responded with knives, which resulted in the murder of Mr Morgan.

In May, Deontay Crosfield, 22, and Jacob Doughty, 21, were jailed for life for his murder.

Following a separate trial at Manchester Crown Court, Bucknor, 19, of Mirfield, Kirklees, was jailed for 25 years for attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Batler, 21, of Belle Vue Crescent, Sheepridge, was sentenced to 24 years for the same offences.

Richards, 20, of Trafalgar Close, Kirklees, was jailed for 11 years for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Det Ch Insp Oliver Coates from West Yorkshire Police said: "We hope these long sentences send a strong message to people in Kirklees who think they can take part in these kind of dreadful acts of violence.

"Five men from Kirklees have now been sentenced for their part in the violence and them being behind bars is good news for the local community of Kirklees."
