The trio have taken part in a variety of events and fundraising exercises in the past four years.

The inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon saw more than 12,000 runners tackle the course raising millions for charities including The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Appeal and the Leeds Hospitals Charity.

Ahead of the race in May, Sinfield described the event, at which he carried his friend over the line, as a "celebration of friendship".

Lindsey, who had hoped to raise £7,777 ended up with pledges worth in excess of £50,000. She finished the 26.2-mile course and told BBC Radio Leeds: "I'm quite emotional actually thinking about it. I'm just a working mum, and I know obviously Rob's wife, but that will make a real difference [to the charity]."

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, external about the Special Recognition Award he is due to collect, Burrow said: "I am inspired by the true unsung heroes that make me proud to be British.

"It is even more special that I get to receive the award alongside my wife Lindsey and great friend Kevin.

"I am so proud of them."

Tanya Curry, chief executive of the MND Association, said: "Rob and Lindsey have shown unwavering courage and positivity while raising awareness of the brutal reality of MND and its many challenges, and Kevin's fundraising efforts has meant that the MND Association has been able to introduce new support for people affected by the disease, and strengthen the services we provide."
