A man who fatally stabbed a father of two through the heart during a confrontation in Leeds has been jailed for nine years.

Kaiden Williams, 22, stabbed Peter Wass, 29, three times during the incident in Hamilton Avenue, Chapeltown, on 2 March this year.

Williams of Edgware Mount, Harehills, fled to the North East but was arrested 10 days later in Hartlepool.

He was cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter after a trial.

On Tuesday he was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court to serve nine years in prison, with an additional five years on licence, for manslaughter as well as a concurrent 18 month term after admitting a charge of possession of an offensive weapon.

Peter Wass died in hospital despite attempts by passers-by to help

West Yorkshire Police said Mr Wass had been a passenger in a BMW that had been travelling in convoy with another car on the day of the attack.

He was then seen involved in a struggle with a man holding a knife, and a baseball bat was seen next to him as he lay injured.

The force said passers-by had tried to help and him to hospital in a car before flagging down an ambulance in nearby Spencer Place where a doctor and paramedics gave him emergency treatment.

He was then taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

Williams was seen running from the scene on CCTV, and a police enquiry led him to an address in Hartlepool, where he was arrested and brought back to Leeds.

Det Ch Insp Sam Freeman said: "Although Peter Wass was killed in circumstances which appeared to show he was taking an active part in the confrontation with Williams, no-one deserves to have their life taken from them in such a sudden and violent way.

"The impact that his death has had on his family, including his two children, is just as painful and heartbreaking regardless of any background to the incident, which remains unclear.

"His death very starkly illustrates the utterly tragic consequences that can occur when people carry knives and are prepared to use them."
