People in Leeds have been reminded to have their say before a consultation ends on plans to improve cycling and walking routes in the city centre.

The scheme focuses on planned improvements to Great George Street, Merrion Street, The Calls and Kirkgate.

Work would include creating safer crossings, pavement widening and the introduction of better connected cycle tracks, the city council said.

There would also be space for new greenery and outdoor dining areas.

Leeds City Council said the closure of City Square had reduced through-traffic from the area, meaning "surplus road space can be reallocated to safer routes for alternative travel options and spaces to spend time in".

The work was being carried out in conjunction with West Yorkshire Combined Authority as part of its City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement programme, the council said.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said: "A reliable and inclusive transport network, which prioritises walking, cycling and public transport, is key to our plans for a stronger and better-connected region.

"This scheme is part of a multi-million pound package of investment to help us achieve that."

Ms Brabin added: "Your opinion matters, so please make the most of this opportunity to have your say and shape the proposals."

The consultation process is due to close on Sunday 19 November, with the option to take part online, external.
