Stanningley Road crash: Man killed and two injured after car hits bus stop

A man has died and two people have been injured after a car hit a bus stop.

Emergency services were called to Stanningley Road in Leeds, near to the junction with Armley Ridge Road, at about 15.15 GMT.

A 62-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and two other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

West Yorkshire Police said a man, 57, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drugs.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage.

The road remains closed and diversions have been put in place.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Air Ambulance said a crew had attended the incident and provided "critical, emergency medical care".

Many bus services were diverted and there were traffic delays reported.

I'm standing on the corner of Armley Ridge Road and Stanningley Road where a large section is closed.

The closure of the busy route has generated a large queue of traffic and police officers are being kept busy diverting rush hour motorists to other routes.

The crash scene is well shielded, with a taped cordon and two police cars, with lights on, meaning people are unable to get close.

In the cordon there are a number of emergency services vehicles and personnel.

Despite the darkness and rain, it appears that investigations at the scene are set to go on for some time yet.
