A spare Christmas tree will be put up to replace a towering festive fir felled by recent high winds.

The 45ft (13.7m) tree at Halifax's Piece Hall was toppled by gusts hitting 58mph during Storm Elin on Saturday.

The bad weather meant the venue had to cancel its planned show from Dick and Dom in its Spiegeltent.

A spokesperson for the venue said the fallen Sitka spruce was being dismantled and recycled - and a replacement was on the way.

The storm brought heavy rain to the region, prompting flood alerts and causing problems on the rail network.

The venue said it had offered refunds to people wo had booked to see Saturday's show which was cancelled "to keep staff and customers safe".

The spokesperson said a new tree, which had previously been felled and held as a spare, would be installed overnight by contractors.
