The owners of a country pub near Huddersfield have said they are "devastated" following a fire on Boxing Day evening.

The owners of the 3 Acres Inn said no-one was injured, but the damage had been "vast" forcing them to close.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the alarm had been raised at about 18:45 GMT on Tuesday and three crews had been dispatched.

The blaze was extinguished and fire crews left the scene at 20:14 GMT.

The 3 Acres, which offers rooms and food near to the recognisable Emley Moor TV mast, is a family-owned business and has been operating for more than 50 years.

The owners said on Facebook, external on Tuesday evening: "We are devastated to share the news that The 3 Acres has had a major fire.

"Nobody has been hurt, and the fire is now out thanks to the amazing crew from Huddersfield Fire Station.

"However, the damage is vast, and we will therefore not be open until further notice."

Fire ripped through a section of the pub and restaurant

Owner Tom Truelove said his grandfather had bought the inn in 1968 and said it had been "pretty heartbreaking" to watch the fire.

"All the family are here, we've had incredible support from everyone, the customers and staff."

The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire, but the heat and smoke damage was extensive.

"It was hard to see the damage last night as it was dark," Mr Truelove said.

"We put a brand new kitchen in which we finished in March... it is devastating, it looks really terrible."

Mr Truelove said it was unclear when the business, which employs about 100 people, would be able to reopen.

"It is going to take a long time to sort it out, it is going to be a hell of a project."

The fire caused a large amount of damage

The fire service said two crews from Huddersfield and one from Rastrick had attended.

"20% of the laundry room was on fire; we used four breathing apparatus and two hose reels," a spokesperson said.

They added that the cause was not known at present, but no fire investigation officer had been requested.
