A former Chinese restaurant in Huddersfield town centre could become new apartments.

The business, on the first floor of Packhorse Shopping Centre on King Street, closed in January 2022, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said.

Z&F Properties Ltd has applied to create 10 one-bedroom studio apartments, Kirklees Council said.

A previous application was revised to address concerns around natural light.

Several elements of the restaurant remain but "harsh strip-outs" are said to have left the space in need of repairs

Several elements of the restaurant remain but "harsh strip outs" are said to have left the space in need of repairs to prevent further deterioration.

Supporting documents for the latest application said the proposals would "complement the existing commercial uses of the Packhorse Centre" and would give a facelift to the upper floor frontage of the "monotonous" 1970s building.

"The Packhorse Centre... lends itself extremely well as a mixed-use development, its excellent location, and potential to offer a diverse range of activities in close proximity to other town centre uses, can sustain the proposed uses and other types of activity including residential," the application read.

"It is not considered that such uses would conflict with each other, in fact they would all complement one another which would result in the transformation of the centre."

A public consultation on the proposals will run until 14 February, with a target date of 27 March set for the council to make a decision.
